MEMBER PROFILE:

Name: Rick Higgs

Birthdate: 1943

Occupation: Business Association Manager

Mini Owner Since: 1992

VMC Member Since: 1997 (should have joined in '92, sorry)

Minis Currently Owned: 1) 1976 1000 ground-up restoration/modification and gifted to son in 1994
2) 1980 1000 known as 'Pooh'
3) 1969 MkII hydrolastic rolling shell (there were 2 others in there somewhere)

How Did You Become Interested In Minis: Nigel Purvis (Westwood GT5 lap record holder) was chief mechanic on my Expo 86 MGB project...and...my then 17 year old son, Jeremy, (on passing a For Sale Mini at Steve Edwardes house in Pitt Meadows) said..."I'd sure like to have a little car like that!"

First Mini Experience Driving: 1976 1000 home over Port Mann Bridge at 80 km/h with blown front brake and huge gouge out of offside tire.

Your Dumbest Mini Experience: Taking completed 1976 rebuild to 1993 ABFM Portland and running out of gas on I5 north of Bellingham, after checking twin tanks with flashlight at home (reused sender was duff).

Most Memorable Mini Experience: Telling Nigel he won final GT5/Production class race outright at Westwood (after starting last on grid)....

Least Memorable Mini Experience: Metallic sound of exhaust valve burning out on last hill to Mt. Orford Park, Quebec.

Your Dream Car: My wife's retirement car (to be found/restored etc.) - a Morris Minor. I will obviously be dreaming about that!

Best Mini Event: MMW 1996 in Long Beach, Calif. (my first) took my nephew down the coast, had a wonderful time!

Most Exhilarating Mini Moment: Dropping in front of 5.0 Mustang at end of Mission Raceway main straight during final SCCBC Race Drivers School race and holding off the hp for 5 laps (okay, it was a little wet).

Why did you join the VMC: To share in the special comradeship, with which people surround the dear little tin box.

Other Interests or Hobbies: Over the years I have enjoyed playing and coaching ice hockey, soccer, fastball and baseball, as well as canoeing, hunting, skiing, travelling, photography. Now we travel by Jeep, Mini (and soon MGB), with the odd hunting trip thrown into the mix.

Farthest Distance Driven by Mini: 12,519 kms. to/from MME 2000 at Cheribourg, Quebec...outstanding!
